Los Bellotos National Reserve

It is a beautiful trip to the mountain – to Linares’ mountain chaín – with a particular kind of vegetation and an excellent tourism infrastructure. There are 57 kms (35.4 miles) from Linares: 13kms (8 miles) paved and 38kms (23.6 miles) of an unpaved road in the mountain.

At los Bellotos National Reserve the most remarkable flora is the south’s Beilschmiedia miersii – a species in extinction risk that is not located in any other wild area protected by the state. Among other trees you will be able to se Maule’s oak, oak, coihue, mountain chain’s cypress, Cryptocaria alba, litri, quillai and hazel tree.

At los Bellotos National Reserve’s, the main birds are black carpenter, pitío, tricahue parrot, eagle, Pyrocephalus rubinus, fio fío, parrakeet, Milvago chimango and Troglodytes aedon.

Los Bellotos National Reserve’s management office is located at the entrance of the area. It is not equipped for picnic or camping.

From Linares – at km 13 – you will find Vara Gruesa Village – a handcraft centre of elements carves in pear tree wood. In here, beautiful stirrups, lamps bases and other kind of elements are made. From Vara Gruesa take a road made of stones to the right that heads to Rabones. Climbing to the east you will find the first mountain chains’ buttress in the beautiful Rabones Valley where it is normal to find groups of goats. cows and horses that goes or returns to the summer pastures.

Rabones Inn is located at km 23, it belongs to a private ecological reserve composed by 140 hectares of forests and rivers. It offers services of food, accommodation and excursions by trekking and horseback riding.

Following the valley you will be able to see breathtaking cliffs of Las Vizcachas to the left and Malcho to the right. At km 35 after passing Putagán river, the road joints to another one that comes from Ancoa river’s valley. Take the west.








At km 51 you will find El Melado Ecological Refuge. Located in a estate of 42 thousand hectares. It has rooms, cabins, restaurant, swimming pool and outdoor Jacuzzi. It is equipped for different kinds of sports such as rafting, fishing, trekking, volleyball, badminton, ping pong and board games.

El Melado Ecological reserve organizes excursions to the surroundings all year round, by car, horseback riding or trekking. One of these leads to Los Bellotos National Reserve. Visits are allowed daily from 9 to 17, entrance is free. Los Bellotos National Reserve is located inside the estate and another one to El Melado channel tunnel – 4200 meters high – which is used as a water channel and as a pathway to the villages located in the up side of Melado river valley.

Acomodation and full board at Los Bellotos Nacional reserve costs $34.000. Children from 10 to 5 and old people bay $23.800 and children under 5, $17.000.

Tours and Excursions by El Melado Construction Frame

At El Melado you can make horseback riding to the mountain chain guided by muleteers who share with you their culture and lifestyle. There are three routes: San Pedro Volcano, El Toro Hill or a tour to the mountain chain refuges they use when they work. It includes the horseback riding and the equipment. Another kind of services such as interpreters, cooker or mountain guides are optional. From September to March.

Linares terrains previous the mountain Caín offer the chances of horseback riding, trips in carts, trekking, fishing, typical food, handcraft and accommodation in camp sites, cabins and family houses.

Return can be done by the same road or by the way that leads to Ancoa river’s valley up to its intersection with Archibueno river and – from there – return to Linares.
