The fundamental intention of the Sanctuary of the Nature and Reserve the Huemules of Niblinto, is to protect the last population of huemules of central Chile. This is a heraldic mammal, an Andean red deer in extinction danger that formerly lived from the Cachapoal River (Rio Cachapoal) towards the south. In addition, it is one of the symbolic species that integrate the national shield of Chile.

In lands of the Reserve and Sanctuary of the Nature the Huemules of Niblinto are approximately 120 species of vegetal type, that are concentrated mainly in three wooded formation. Between the diversity and variability of altitudes, live a large number of animal species; 26 of mammals, 49 of birds, 7 of reptiles and 4 of amphibians. At least 8 species of them are with conservation problems.
Taking care of the Resources of the South of Chile.
The Sanctuary of the Nature and Reserve of the Huemules of Niblinto, forms between the cooperation of the State treasury and lands of CODEFF, that at the same time forms a single unit of conservation and handling. This cooperation between an area of conservation of property and a state one is unknown and represents a new approach in the challenge of the conservation. The unit conformed by the Sanctuary (Santuario) and the National Reserve of the Huemules of Niblinto, has as objectives not only to promote the conservation of the population of huemules and its habitat in the zone of the Snowed of Chillán (Nevados de Chillán), but also to conserve the biological diversity present in the zone of the Snows (Los Nevados), as well as to protect and handle the hydrographic river basins of the unit to maintain the basic hydric regimes for the development of the commune of Coihueco.
The Plan for the Conservation of the Huemul of the South, elaborated by CONAF and CODEFF, with the support of different people and institutions, raises the necessity to establish biological runners and zones of cushioning to physically allow the intercommunication between separated sectors of wild life. The sector of Snows of Chillán (Nevados de Chillán) and the Lagoon of the Laja (Laguna del Laja), of more than 500 thousand hectares, have been considered as a biological running potential; and one of the main routes to assure the conservation of the Huemul in central Chile.
The biological runner Snows of Chillán (Nevados de Chillán) and the Lagoon of the Laja (Laguna del Laja), located in the mountain range of The Andes (Los Andes) and between 36º35 ' and 37º30 ' South Lat., correspond to an Andean zone of pre mountain range and mountain range, characterized by the convergence of vegetation associations of the north and the south of Chile. It protects the last population of Huemules (Hippocamelus bisulcus) of Central Chile.
The Huemul, species considered In Danger of Extinction, at national and world-wide level, does not count on the central zone with more than 50 individuals. Its process of extinction is mainly, in the sector of the Snows of Chillán (Nevados de Chillán), due to the progressive destruction of its habitat because of extensive cattle activities, substitution of native vegetation, and infrastructure works, in the tourist area, real estate, gasoductos and pipe lines.
According to the most encouraging data, the population of huemules in Chile and Argentina do not surpass the two thousand units at the moment. Its original distribution in Chile went from the South of Rancagua till the end of the South Chile, and today the population of Huemules is found only in the zone of Snows of Chillán (Nevados de Chillán) and, in continental Chiloé (Chiloé continental) and regions XI and XII.
With the objective to conduct integrally these actions, is developing a handling plan that contemplates the following programs: of investigation, of operations such as protection, maintenance and works, program of public use, among which are emphasized education, recreation and eco tourism, and a program of handling of resources, such as the flora, the fauna, the handling of the huemul, the ground and the hydric resources. In the implementation of the sanctuary, today, cooperate CODEFF, CONAF, the Zoological Society of Frankfurt, The Nature Conservancy, universities, municipalities and private organizations. The Natural Reserve of the Huemules of Niblinto (Reserva Natural de Los Huemules del Niblinto) is open between the months of November till April, counts on a day-care center, zone of camping and a sanitary cabin. The value of the entrance is no defined.
Located in the commune of Coihueco, Province of Ñuble, in these grounds come together three wooded lands formation that are not found or they are barely represented in the National System of Protected Wild Areas, SNASPE, and that occupy 44% of the estate: the caducifolio forest of the mountain, of great floral wealth and characterized by the presence of cypress of the mountain range; the caducifolio forest of the border limit, where dominate the oaks, raulíes and coihues; and the high Andean forest of Chillán, represented by lenga and ñirre. Studies carried out by investigators of the National Committee Pro Defense of Fauna and Flora, CODEFF, determined the presence of 121 vegetal species in the area, of which six are with conservation problems: cypress of the mountain range, ulmo, saint sour cherry, maitén, lleuque and dwarfed radal.
A mountainous land with high summits, that displays little vegetation and a strong volcanic influence, are also characteristic of the unit. This large diversity as well as the altitudinal variability of the area, constitutes the ideal space for a high wealth of animals species, many of them with conservation problems. Thus, associated to the forest are the monkey of mount, the small longhaired mouse, arbor cola mouse, the big ears bat, guiña and the pudú, among others. In the mountainous zone of summit and Andean steppe inhabit the mountain range mole mouse, the tunduco, and the vizcacha. More widely distributed between diverse atmospheres are the olive little mousse, the cat colocolo, the culpeo fox, the fox chilla and, of course, the huemul. 80 percent of the described birds for the region are in the Sanctuary of the National Reserve the Huemules de Niblinto (Santuario de la Reserva Nacional de los Huemules de Niblinto). 43 species, among which, it is possible to find the rayadito, torcaza, the big woodpecker and concón. The Andean steppe sectors are characterized by the presence of the mountain range yal, the schoolboy and sleepy-heads, among others. It is also frequent in this type of atmosphere to observe condors, which make nests in the cracks of rocky walls in the limits of the Sanctuary and Reserve (Santuario y Reserva). Amphibians as the venusto toad and the big toad of four large eyes stand out by their peculiarity and state of conservation.
The area of the Sanctuary and the National Reserve of the Huemules of Niblinto (Santuario y la Reserva Nacional de los Huemules de Niblinto) reach relevance by the presence of a rare and endemic species of the zone, the small lizard of Chillán, associated to Andean atmospheres. There are also two species in extinction danger, matuasto, inhabitant of scrubs and steppes, and the lizard of necktie, associated to wooded atmospheres.
Within the Natural Reserve of the Huemules of Niblinto is recommended to visit sites of great scenic beauty, between which stand out:
Matting Blue Stones (Estero Piedras Azules). It is a valley of glacial origin surrounded of high vegetation such as ñirres and lengas and coigües of a middle height. This sector is to the northwest of the unit, and it is in the North sector of the Niblinto River (Rio Niblinto), between the matting the Chucao (Estero El Chucao) and the mouth of the matting the Hole (desembocadura del Estero del Hoyo). It includes a wooded sector and it has a surface of 487 hectares. This area is used for the investigation, education, recreation and ecotourism. It is also the entrance to the sector of Niblinto and lodging for the visitors. It is recommended to carry out the following activities: education and environmental interpretation, control of visitors, scenic observation of the flora, fauna and scenic beauties, photographies and filming, sport fishing, delivery of environmental qualification and recreational activities.
Valley of the Niblinto (Valle del Niblinto) includes 7,530 hectares, in the confluence of the Niblinto River (Rio Niblinto) with the matting the Mares (Estero Las Yeguas), this is represented by sectors of leafy trees with prairies with scrubs of coigüe, mountain range cypress, ulmo, maitén, dwarf saint sour cherry, lleuque, oaks, radal, notro and quilas. Among the species of the animal kingdom stand out viscacha, cat colo-colo, güiña, puma, quique, fox, chingue and fleecy mouse among others. In the birds emphasize the condor, peuquito, torcaza and choroy. You can carry out excursions, cavalcades, fishing, swimming and observation of flora and fauna.
Heads and Nascent of Niblinto River (Cabeceras y Nacientes del Rio Niblinto), a footpath that crosses the underbrush until the basaltic farellón that gives origin to the Niblinto river (Rio Niblinto), a rocky edge that limits with the Snows of Chillán (Nevado de Chillán) and the cords that arrive to the Ñuble river (Rio Ñuble).
Matting the Mares (Estero Las Yeguas) this sector is to the interior of the unit, in front of the mouth of the matting the Mares (estero Las Yeguas), its approximate surface is of 10 hectares. This area is used for the ecotourism and also for the investigation of the nature and in addition the unit administrative command. There are different possible activities to make in this place, as for example, investigation and observation of the flora and fauna, monitoring, patrolling, photograph and video, ecotourism and contemplation of the nature, hiking and camping.
Reservoir of Coihueco (Embalse de Coihueco) located 19 miles of Chillán. The reservoir of Coihueco (Embalse de Coihueco) is located in a mountain range place, surrounded by vegetation. It gives origin to a lagoon used for water skiing and sailing. It is a good place for picnic and for swimming.
