Futaleufú River
The Futaleufú National Reserve is visible from the Austral Highway (Carretera Austral) where it narrows and becomes extremely torrential. The beauty of its blue waters contrasts with the white color of its rapids, delivering a unique view and an overwhelming spectacle. At the Futaleufú Bridge you can stop by the large rock walls that enclose a dangerous rapid; through this place you can see people descending on kayaks or rafts by this riverbed, which is the most coveted for this specialty. The Futaleufú River before was not considered suitable for rafting; however the company Earth River traveled down the river in 1991.
The road continues by virgin lands next to the river, with occasional and difficult rapids. Continuing on the Austral Highway you will find the hanging bridge that crosses the Futaleufú River, taking you to the beautiful mountain valley where the El Palenque shelter is located, which offers a variety of excursions and lodging.

The town of Futaleufú has a population of about 1,100. Futaleufú is a border town with wide streets with lights on a beautiful oasis. Futaleufú has an Aerodrome and services available. In the so called Gélvez footbridge, the rapids and descends of the Futaleufú river begin.
