The Small North is an area that includes the Atacama and Coquimbo Region. Beautiful beaches such as Caldera and Bahía Inglesa, famous due to the warm and clear waters. Also cities as La Serena, Coquimbo and the Elqui Valley. All this area is famous since you can find the most clear skies in the world. That is why several astronomic observatories are located there (El Tololo, La Silla, Gemini and the Mamalluca Observatory), and you can visit during all the year, considering the warm weather you can find.
There are some observation places at Pan de Azucar Nacional Park as for example: Castillo Canyon’s mouth. From where you can see cactus and guanacos; another one is Las Lomitas pathways from where you can see the differences in the vegetation between the sea level and 700 meters high.

At first Illapel was founded in 1752, but then it was relocated in another place. In 1788 the re-foundation of Illapel was ordered at the place where is currently located, with the aim of benefiting the miners and landowners of the valley.
