Gorge of the Devil near San Pedro de Atacama

Gorge of the Devil or as locals call it “La garganta del Diablo” , with a steep unevenness that descends to the valley of the Ibáñez River, displays strange caves with rocky formation and a particular fauna composed by lizards, foxes and hares. This stroll acquires mysterious tone under the starred sky and with the light of the torches.

It is an attractive stroll to do by foot or bicycle, which crosses a narrow passage between hills with a winding road bordered by vertical and sawed walls, created by the erosion of the softest layers of the Mountain range of the Salt; there calcareous quartz pieces and lines like of chalk can be seen, agglutinated with mud.

Signalized with a disc and a number 10 there is the Administrative Center Incaico de Catarpe on the top, which requires to step up of the car and climb with strong slope until reaching the summit. With 200 stone structures united with mud, it was an impressive center of the Incaic Empire. Catarpe is part of our San Pedro de Atacama Tour which includes other archaeological sites as well.

When returning to the road in km 8, it is the Village of Catarpe, with the last houses and the Chapel of San Isidro, built in 1913 by Italian colon Lucas Cenzano and still taken care by his descendants. The image of San Isidro was made in Bolivia.

The “Garganta del diablo” is a great tour for those who wish to practice some outdoor adventure near San Pedro de Atacama, because it is located only 7 kms away, makes it available for everyone.

Your that idea of crossing it ona bike sounds crazy as well as exciting. But there is nothing much to see in such a place full of sand .One goes for a trip so that he can enjoy but there is nothing such here that one can be impressed. Just cycling isn’t enough. The place is good only for shooting the songs of the movies , I would never like to visit such a place.

    excuse my english, please!
