Linares is situated 118 miles from Santiago and has 77.316 inhabitants.

Linares was founded in May 23rd , 1794 as Village, originally named San Ambrosio of Linares (Villa de San Ambrosio de Linares) . The city has been inhabited by important politicians, writers and artists. Today is the capital of the province and an active industrial and commercial center. In Linares it is possible to witness important cultural centers and buildings of beautiful and modern architectural design, which combine with the colonial ones.

Sites within the city:
While you are in Linares visit San Ambrosio Cathedral (Iglesia Catedral de San Ambrosio)-Built in a romantic bizantine style, covered in bricks with arches surrounding it , it has a tall campanile separated from the church, admire the pulpit, the apse, the Episcopal throne and the altar made of Carrara marble and one of the biggest mosaics in South America, done by Guilio Di Girolame. Underground you will find the Chapel of the Remembrances (Capilla de los recuerdos) with murals painted by Fray Pedro Subercaseaux. During summer there are masses from Monday to Saturday at 8:30 and 20, Sundays at 8:30, 11:30 and 20; during winter Monday to Saturday at 8:30 and 19:30, Sundays at 8:30, 11:30 and 19:30.

The Corazón de María Church (Iglesia Parroquial Corazón de María) It has a gothic style with ribbed pillars and a magnificent altarpiece. There are masses from October to March from Monday to Saturday at 19:30; Sundays and free days at 9, 12, 19:30. Between March and October from Monday to Saturday at 19; Sundays and free days at 9, 12 and 19.

The Museum of Arts and National Handcraft (Museo de Arte y Artesanía Nacional), Installed in an old colonial house it keeps a handcraft collection from the surrounding centers as well as a Chilean painting, drawing, engraving and sculpture exhibition from different times, a small archaeological exposition and a room for history, weapons, trophies, uniforms, photographs and valuable documents. Visits can be done from December to March, from Tuesday to Friday from 10 to 17:30, Saturdays from 10 to 19; Sunday from 14 to 19. From April to November, from Tuesday to Friday from 10 to 17:30, Saturday from 10 to 17 and Sunday from 12 to 17. Entrance fee costs $600, children pay $300.

Don Bosco Salesian School produces exquisite cheeses, cakes and pork dried meat made with natural ingredients. Show room is open from Monday to Saturday from 9 to 13.

Don’t miss the City Hall and Linares Governors’ Office, the last one was built on 1890 with wide walls and restored in 1993 after a fire.

Nearby attractive sites:
Linares has an attractive nature represented by places such as el Melado, Pejerrey swamp, Achibueno and Ancoa River. At the entrance of the mountain range area you will find hot spring resorts such as Panimavida hot springs and Quinamávida hot springs and Rari village, with handcrafts made of horse hair.
