The Museo Historico Nacional was created in 1911 and is located in downtown Santiago, holds more than 1600 pieces ,all of them, representative samples of the different periods of Chilean history. The building is neoclassic type with Toscan elements. On it, Don Mateo de Toro y Zambrano was elected as the President of the First Assembly of the National Government in 1810. The sample that is conserved in its interior represents periods that include from the Discovery until the Republic.

The exhibit includes religious furniture, pictures, objects, arms, uniforms, dresses and other references to personages who wrote our history.

Room 1 is dedicated to the indigenous towns previous to the arrival of the Spaniards.

Rooms 2 and 3: about the periods of Discovery and country Conquest.

Rooms 4 to the 6: exhibit pieces of the Colony. To emphasizes the altar of the Jesuit property, La Punta, near to Santiago. In the second floor, Room 7: approaches the XVIII century.

Rooms 8 to the 10: are dedicated to Independence, here lodges a collection of pictures of personalities of the time, made it in majority by the remarkable Peruvian painter Jose Gil de Castro, precursor of the Chilean painting.

In Rooms 11 to the 13 the different periods included the XIX century are exhibited; including the textile collection of the museum, with garments of the time.

In Rooms 14 to the 16 history of XX century treats until year 1973. In the Room Idea of Independence a collection of currencies, saltpeter cards and medals where the coined materials and its processes of manufacture are appraised.

The museum deserves a slow visit. For summer visits, the schedule is Tuesdays to Sundays from 10 to 17:30 hours. The entrance is of $600, children from 8 to 18 years old and college students $300; schools, groupings of Boy Scout and elderly people, free entrance. Sunday and holidays is free. For those who rent a car for Santiago site watching you can safely park on the underground parkings beneath Plaza de Armas, entrance is through Santo Domingo street.
