Carlota Lake National Reserve was created in 1965, its limits and surface has had variations, at the moment its surface is of 18,060 hectares.

Carlota Lake National Reserve is located in the Province of Coihaique (Provincia de Coihaique), Commune of Green Lake , in the sector the Tapera , distant  142 miles approximately to the northeast of Coihaique.

Carlota Lake National Reserve is located in a cold steppe climate, meaning, dry, with average precipitations annual no superior to 16.907 ounces, with short humid season and very low temperatures in winter.

The vegetation in Carlota Lake National Reserve is compound fundamentally of the vegetation formation Forest Caducifolio of Aisén, dominated by Lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) and Ñirre (N. Antarctica), in its more Eastern distribution, practically surrounded by the steppe.

The species of fauna more common to observe in Carlota Lake National Reserve are Puma (Felis concolor), Huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus), red Fox (Zorro Colorado) (Pseudalopex culpaeus), Patagonic Chingue (Conepatus Humboldt), Piche (Zaedyus pichi) and species introduced as the Hare  (Lepus capensis ) and Red Deers  ( Cervus elaphus).

Among the birds that we found in Carlota Lake National Reserve are common the Cóndor (Condor), (Vultur gryphus), Tagle (Eagle)  (Geranoaetus melanoleucus), Kestrel, (Falco sparverius), fisher man Martín (Ceryle torcuata), Chucao (Scelorchilus rubecula), Zorzal (Turdus falklandii), Tordo (Cureaus cureaus) and the Cachaña (Enicognathus ferrugineus).

The unit of Carlota Lake National Reserve counts on a rustic refuge and transitory personnel during the months of summer.
