The National Reserve of Alacalufes was created in 1969, and is located to the south of the Estrecho de Magallanes (Strait of Magellan). The National Reserve of Alacalufes comprises the western archipelagos and presents a landscape of low mountainous islands, with numerous channels and fjords.

Ultima Esperanza, Magallanes, Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica provinces are placed within the reserve which helds  a surface of 5.717.709,65 acres. It’s only access is by the Magallanes ship, in Puerto Montt; Puerto Natales and Puerto Chacabuco.

The two types of climate can be found in the area:  Tempered Cold with Great Humidity and Isothermal Climate of Tundra, with an annual thermal average of 7,2° C and 6,5° C, respectively. The precipitations in The National Reserve of Alacalufes are high, reaching to 96,4567 in; every month of the year are received more than 6,6929 in but never exceed 9,4488 in.

The flora of the reserve is  composed by Coastal Vegetation, Coastal, Scrubs, Formation of Coigüe and Turbales. The main exponents are the Lenga, Ñirre, Cinnamon-coloured, Cypress of the Guaitecas, Michay, Nalca and the amusing catch fly.

Whereas the fauna of The National Reserve of Alacalufes is composed by a great variety of birds and mammals, standing out the marine fauna, composed by the austral Dolphin, sea lions and whales (See Whales in Chile).

The main activities that can be made in The National Reserve of Alacalufes are sea kayak sailing , trekking by the qualified footpaths and observation of mainly marine fauna.
