Los Pingüinos  Natural Monument is located in the Strait of Magellan to 21,75 miles of Punta Arenas. It has a surface of 239,69 acres, 12 correspond to  Marta Island and the 85 rest to Magdalena Island . Los Pingüinos  Natural Monument was declared protected area in August of 1966 like Park National and reclassified like a Natural Monument in1982.

The purpose of this natural monument  is  to protect the birds within this ecosystem : penguins and cormorants . The isolation of the islands helps the  preservation of  penguin’s nesting place in southern Chile, The penguins form large  communities  over the 200 thousand specimens  and dug caves where to put their eggs. The current population has been considered in 60.000 pairs of Magellan penguins (Sphenicus Magallanicus), which constitutes more than 95 percent of the bird fauna biomass.

From remote times these islands, that conform Los Pingüinos  Natural Monument , were visited by the natives to make their hunting task. Los Pingüinos  Natural Monument is ideal to make tours in which can be crossed the islands Magdalena and Marta, to observe the great groupings of birds between which emphasize the Magellan’s penguin and cormorants.
