Pucon and Chile’s Lake District

If you like adventure come to Pucon. Located in the south of Chile it is a place to come more than once.  We rented a 4WD pick-up truck (rented at our Santiago’s airport arrival through letsgochile.com) and took highway 5 towards the south.  Drove like 9 hours, but the landscape was so beautiful that we didn’t feel the distance. In the other hand roads are excellent, although don’t forget to have enough cash, cause there are MANY tolls in the highway.

Puerto Octay

Puerto Octay

Pucon is absolutely complete,  as we took our camping things, just sleeping bags and tent, we could move all around with no restrictions other than time, which we had a lot.  It’s full of lakes and rivers we enjoyed fishing very much. There are many national parks (Huerquehue is one of them and I highly recommended), we camped many times, have to say everything is very organized, the accommodations are all over and of all kind. The cuisine is wonderful, and the adventure tourism offer is wide.  Rafting is one of the main attractions of the place and it’s perfectly organized, they take you in special shuttles or pick-up trucks, and take everything you might need.  It is just a fascinating place to go, the nature is unforgettable.

As we had this 4WD pick-up truck, they recommended us to go more to the south. First hotel we stayed, in Puerto Octay, was called Centinela (wonderful) we had like a fishing tour with a guy from the hotel who took us very early one morning to fish trouts and salmon, they cooked it for us later at night and from that day on we couldn’t stop eating this wonderful fish everywhere we’d go.

We then decided to go headed towards Carretera Austral, that was another complete and different adventure.  First we have to get to Puerto Montt, where we had the best seafood, took a ferry to keep going to the south. The geography changes a lot, it’s full of little islands, so the ferry is “the” vehicle, necessary to get every way.  There are no big hotels, but it’s full of cozy places where to stay, the people are extremely friendly. Rivers, waterfalls, forests, just you and nature.
